Intel has introduced the long-awaited Extreme Edition mobile processor. The standard Core 2 Extreme X7800 boasts 2.66 GHz clock speed, with 4MB of shared L2 cache. A 2.8Ghz version of the processor is expected later on this year
Intended for gaming and high-performance laptops, the new model uses the 65nm process and has an 800MHz Front Side Bus speed. The new Extreme model replaces the 2.4GHz T7700 at the top of the Core 2 tree. As with other Extreme edition processors, the processor is unlocked - ideal for those looking to overclock it.
Indeed, it has apparently already been overclocked to 3GHz inside an Asus gaming laptop.

Intel Targets High-End Gaming Laptops
Intel has begun selling a faster processor designed to attract computer gamers to laptops. The new processor is the ”Core 2 Extreme” mobile processor. It is claimed to be 28 percent faster than the previous top-of-the-line model. It’s the first model to carry the Extreme brand, previously reserved for Intel’s fastest desktop chips. Analysts say Intel is hoping to stimulate laptop sales, which are currently outstripping the desktop market and expected to grow rapidly. Laptop shipments may jump 27 percent this year, compared with a 2.4 percent gain for desktops, according to Gartner.
Are Gaming Laptops A Joke?
The Inqurier thinks so:
Let’s look at the pros of the current crop of gaming laptops. They are, in no particular order:
1. More portable than a desktop
2. Fanbois think you are coolNow let’s look at the down sides, again in no particular order:
1. Very expensive
2. Proprietary hardware that is unfixable if it breaks
3. Proprietary hardware that is unupgradable
4. Slow CPUs
5. Slow buses
6. Slow memory
7. Slow HDs
8. GPU makers lie about the capabilities of mobile GPUs (the 5000M is every bit as good as a 5000, really)
9. They are heavier than a normal laptop
10. They are as portable as a phone book
11. Battery life measured in hummingbird wingflaps
12. Screen responses measured in glacial movement units
13. Keyboards and mice that pale in response to a Logitech G5/G15
14. Lots of expensive crap bolted on you will never use
I’d have to agree with several points (8,11,14), but to be fair I rarely move my laptop around so portabilty (10) is a relative concept, plus lets face it when gaming I plug in a decent mouse and external keyboard.
What do you think?

Engadget is reporting that Haier has created a Transformers-themed laptop. It’s got a good spec too with the G70 notebook running on Intel’s PM965 chipset, and featuring a 1920 x 1200 pixel 17-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a 120GB Hard Disk, and a GeForce Go 7950GTX with 512MB of VRAM.
It’s just not a transformer, sigh.
